You might just take smaller sections of your hair to curl. I might also suggest that putting a little spray on each area before curling it will also make it stay in place. My hair is very hard to hold a curl and that works great for me. I would say aqua net is cheap but it really works

lol i have thick hair too and it takes me a long time to curl my hair but i just use one of those small curlers and take small bundles of hair and when i curl it, i hold the iron in for one and a half minutes...it takes a while but it looks REALLY good =]

I use to have the same problem. I guess my question for you is what kind of curling iron are you using? I realized, after going through so many curling irons that my hair simply was not curling because the quality of the curling irons that I was using were not good.

I later invested in a ceramic hair straightener that I spent approximately $80 on and it works wonder.

But wait, you must be thinking, "I want to curl my hair not straighten it." Well, the whole point of me telling you this is because you can basically curl hair with any good quality hair straightener. It took me a month or so to get the technique down, but it is definitely worth it! The "secret" is because the hair straightener that I use gets REALLY hot, so it keeps my hair straight/curled for much much longer.
